Carbon Ads Review - A Curated Native Ad Network Built Exclusively for Developer and Tech Audiences

Carbon Ads has been running since 2010 — 16 years of building a curated network that operates on a simple premise: developers hate ads, but they'll tolerate ads that are relevant, non-intrusive, and from brands they recognize. $120 million paid to publishers to date. 49 billion impressions served across 350+ hand-picked sites.

For Publishers

Publishers join by submitting their site through a contact form — Carbon manually reviews every application and hand-picks which sites get accepted. The network is organized into four publisher categories: Frontend & Frameworks (148 sites), Developer Tools & Infrastructure (119 sites), Design & Creative (49 sites), and AI & Emerging (36 sites). Carbon handles all aspects of advertising on behalf of publishers — ad matching, optimization, revenue management — so publishers focus on content rather than ad operations. Monetization runs without cookies, using pixel-based tracking instead. Two ad formats are available: Classic and Cover. Both are non-intrusive by design and customizable to match site aesthetics.

For Advertisers

The commission model is CPC. There's no self-serve buying option — all campaigns run through Carbon's team. First-time advertisers typically start with $5,000–$10,000 monthly over a 60–90 day period. Targeting options include country-level, OS, and browser-based refinements, with non-English-speaking countries excluded by default to optimize audience relevance.

The Weak Point

Carbon's manual curation model means publishers without an established developer or tech audience won't get accepted — the network only works for sites that already have the right readers. That's a publisher-side barrier specifically; advertisers benefit from the curation since it means every impression reaches a verified, high-intent technical audience regardless of how competitive the application process is on the supply side.

Sixteen years in ad tech without pivoting to programmatic open auction is either stubbornness or conviction — the $120 million paid to publishers suggests it's the latter.
